Top 5 Self-Defense situations
If you were to examine US court self-defense claims, you would find an overwhelming amount info and material. Claims can be all over the place. But if we sift through it all, you can start to recognize the following 5 common self-defense situations:
#5 - Breaking up a fight. Your intentions are in the right spot. But usually you just get pulled in to the fight. You are also assuming who you think is the person in the right and the wrong. You may not have all of the facts. Best bet is to stay out of it. Call the police and be a good witness.
#4 - The bar fight. Not as common as “back in the day.” Especially considering that the day where you fight it out and have a beer afterwards is long gone. Now the bar and anyone hurt during the fray will be pressing charges. Probably not worth the any hospitalization costs and any fees you may have to pay at a local magistrates’ courtroom. I’d rather apologize, give the guy some drink money and leave.
#3 - Neighbor disputes. All is fine and dandy until that neighbor starts to going off their rocker. As in all cases diplomacy is the best policy. If that does not work, call the authorities. In extreme cases, move. It’s a better option than winding up in prison and regretting your actions.
#2 - Dog attack. - Your best bet with any type of animal attack is using a non-lethal counter defense such as a pepper spray for animals or a stun gun. But that is if you are prepared. Not having an option leaves you with your foot for stomping and/or your fist for hitting on the muzzle/snout.
#1 - Road rage. Not surprising that this is the most common situation. This can escalate quickly. Safest bet is to stay in your car and don’t engage. The issue is if you have triggered someone to that point they may be carrying a firearm and decide to pull it out. You don’t know who is or isn’t carrying a weapon and who is on the brink of breaking. If you are at fault, acknowledge it. Give them a wave. Let them go by. If they stop and get out. Try to move along safely and legally.
