A note on equipment…

What is needed?

  • A good attitude and the willingness to put in dedicated time to practice. You will have access to a lot of material, don’t be in a rush to get through it all. Quality is better than quantity. The items listed below all help augment the training. Don’t think that you NEED the items below to practice. In all cases, an easy, affordable replacement or makeshift item can work. I will give suggestions in the module lessons on how to modify your training if you do not have a certain piece of equipment.

  • A training partner. Try to enlist a friend/relative to do this with you. Some exercises you will need to have a live person with you. In fact, you can even ask them to split the cost with you.

  • MMA gloves. Although not really a necessity, they do come in handy when doing alot hitting on mitts, a bag or a B.O.B. (body opponent bag) to protect your hands.

  • A set of rattan eskrima sticks (24” to 28” long; 1” diameter). Actually any stick or stick like object can work, but rattan eskrima sticks can take a beating and keep going. I have links to preferred dealers where you can buy a set. Not all sticks are equal, mind you.

  • A training blade - either aluminum or polypropylene. Getting 2 trainers would be ideal. I have links to preferred dealers where you can buy quality trainers.

  • Striking mitts, heavy bag and/or B.O.B. Striking mitts are easy to get and very affordable. A B.O.B. is suggested over a heavy bag but can be more expensive. I suggest checking Craig’s List, Facebook Market Place and eBay for some used deals. A heavy bag can be utilized if that is what you have already.
