We all know the expression “like a deer in the headlights.” Referring to the freeze movement that a deer will do when caught in the path of an oncoming car. Only at the last moment when freezing doesn’t work will the deer then try to flee.
The same thing happens in self-defense. When we are ambushed, we freeze. It can be very surreal. The brain is trying figure out what is happening and why. In the meantime, your attacker is hitting you, pushing you, assailing you. The real question isn’t what or or why but how long will you stay frozen? You need break the freeze. No matter how much training you have, everyone will freeze in an ambush. Those with more training & conditioning will break out of the freeze faster and will take action.
Don’t be like a deer caught in the headlights!
